Capella Ranch Bee Art

At Capella Ranch, the bees produce amazing vapor as their honey cures, and to ensure that the vapor circulates freely in each Bee Hut, we equip each hive with a screened top.  The bees realize this is the top of their hive, but they think it needs to be sealed up.  So the bees dispatch a few workers to fill the screen with propolis, which is a special kind of beeswax made with tree sap just for sealing openings.  Propolis is sort of like a honeybee's version of caulking compound.

Over time, the bees make progress filling the screen, and the patterns they make with the propolis are simply gorgeous.  When the screen tops become mostly full, we exchange them for new, clean screen tops.  We then remove the screen from the wooden frame used in the hive and put the amazing honeybee artwork in a display frame.  The one-of-a-kind artwork should last a lifetime - as long as you keep it below 140°F/60°C (the melting point of beeswax).
